Homemade Essential Oil Mist Spray

Thinking about making your own essential oil spray? DIY fragrance sprays are inexpensive, simple to make, low-waste (using reusable glass bottles saves on plastic packaging), and highly customizable.

A recipe with alcohol

In this recipe, the alcohol acts as an emulsifier and preservative. It improves the blend of water and oil in your spray and keeps things shelf-stable.

What you’ll need:

  • glass spray bottle (use a dark bottle to protect the oils from light and prevent them from spoiling)
  • 25 to 40 drops of essential oil, depending on how strong you want your scent to be
  • 1 cup vodka or witch hazel
  • 1 cup distilled water

Combine ingredients in the bottle and shake well before using.

A recipe without alcohol

If you prefer an alcohol-free recipe, leave out the vodka and witch hazel and replace them with water. Blends without preservatives will not survive as long and should be used up soon.

Ingredients

  • 2-ounce spray bottle (since you're planning to use this one quickly, it doesn't matter if the bottle is dark or not)
  • 2 ounces of distilled water
  • 30 drops of essential oil

Mix all the ingredients and shake your essential oil spray bottle before use.
